Arden of Faversham is the finest extant specimen of a kind of play which has been classified as Domestic Tragedy.

Arden of Faversham is a work of Elizabethan drama by an unknown author. Through his ruthless business dealings he has come into possession of a huge amount of land once owned by the local Abbey.

Arden has had some excellent news. A picturesque or sensational murder in the sixteenth century was given to the public first in popular ballads or pamphlets, and afterwards, if sufficiently notable, in the more serious Chronicle. Originally performed in 1592 and published the next year, it has been attributed at different times in its history to William Shakespeare, Thomas Kyd, and Christopher Marlowe. But despite his great wealth, Arden isn't happy. Arden of Faversham is a domestic tragedy (author unknown), depicting the murder of Thomas Arden, by his wife and her lover.
