When the firm was asked to design an exhibition room for the lamp manufacturer Max Seifert, Heckel was able to persuade the industrialist that it was worthwhile giving wall space and displays to the Brucke for an exhibition.

Heckel subsequently moved to Hemmenhofen on Lake Constance, and in 1949 he was appointed professor at the "Akademie der Bildenden Künste" in Karlsruhe. After the war was over he taught at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Karlsruhe from 1949 to 1955.

Erich Heckel was a founder member of Die Brücke, one of the most significant movements in 20th Century European Art.He and his co-founders, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Fritz Bleyl and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner were greatly impressed by the work of Edvard Munch, and aimed to make a ‘Bridge’ between the traditional German neo-romantic painting of the time, and emerging Expressionism.

Zunächst begann er ein Architekturstudium in Dresden. Between 1897 and 1904 he attended the Realgymnasium in Chemnitz, before studying architecture in Dresden.

As a member of Die Brücke, Heckel often filled the role of business manager, which allowed the collective to network with other upcoming artists at the time, such as the Munich-based Franz Marc.

From 1922 to 1923 he worked on a mural cycle entitled Stages of Existence now in the Angermuseum in Erfurt. During his final years he returned to an Expressionistic type of painting that was less aggressive and violent in form tha that of his early period. Heckel designed starkly graphic prints of figures—often depicted in states of psychological distress—within simplified compositions, and he was influenced by the literature and philosophy of Nietzsche and Dostoevsky. He received painting and drawing classes in Chemnitz, where he met Karl Schmidt-Rottluff.

In 1944, Heckel’s Berlin studio suffered a direct hit during an air-raid and all of his woodcut blocks, his printing plates, and many of his works were destroyed. He spent his last years in retirement in Hemmenhofen, near Radolfzell, by Lake Constance, where he died.

Heckel was born in Döbeln, Saxony, the son of a railway engineer. In 1904 the two of them moved to Dresden to study architecture at the Technische Hochschule, where they coincided with Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Fritz Bleyl. He also produced many woodcuts of great formal simplification.
