After all he was not entirely new to sailing...he was already an accomplished sailor a master mariner by profession...yet admitted to the world his mistakes e.g. From his hilarious encounters with hapless Fuegian pirates, to the goat which devoured Joshua's ropes, hat and charts, and the sea port which thought the devil himself had sailed in, every chapter of this beautifully written book is a delight to read.

There are a lot of good sailing books out there, but I think this one is the best. Very few writings like this exist, and because it is written by a lay-person writer, it presents a very candid and revealing perspective of how a true adventurer experienced global travel and carried on without the benefit of electronic navigation and communication, Underrated book (especially the B&N version), Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2014.
It's no wonder this excellent piece of literature is public domain, what Joshua Slocum set to accomplish later in life is awe inspiring, as is the actual journey, made both personal and entertaining by his perspective, humor, and self effacing eloquence.

The book, first published in 1901, would be considered an "old book" if not for the fact that, by any other measure, it is a timeless story.

No it is probably not a candidate for the great literary works of art but it does what any good book should do which is tell a story and fire up the imagination. Although he gained some considerable fame for the accomplishment, his story is now pretty obscure. It is a wonderful adventure story from the Age of Sail and a book of which Arthur Ransome declared, "boys who do not like this book ought to be drowned at once".

Surely, still one of the greatest feats a person can do, requiring great skill, stamina, courage, luck and the ability to sleep little and stay alert. Like the Spray, Sailing Alone Around the World is Slocum’s original creation, and it has enjoyed a long life in many editions, reprintings, and retellings. Written in his own hand, as a non-professional writer, it is amazingly well done. I teased a chapter a day out of it, just to make the reading experience last a bit longer.
