1273 a.d. records can be found of the use of a gunpowder cannon by the Arab Sultan Abou-Youssouf, shooting of the 'iron gravel' on the besieged soldiers of Sidjilmesa ! The rapid evolution of the operations from a conventional field war to a trech war gave way to the quick and almost improvised development of trench artillery, whose mission was to send an as big as possible explosive charge to a short range, following an almost vertical ballistic curve. Breech loading, rifled light field guns, generally from 37mm to 105mm in diameter, were fed with unitized ammunition, consisting of a shell, smokeless powder or cordite propellant, and primer loaded in a fixed metallic case. It also probably caused me to drop off to sleep, though I am not aware of this. The Main de Massiges was one of the major sites of the First World War from 1914 to 1918. The photographs appear in a variety of sizes, shapes and colours including shades of blue, green and brown. This kind of weapons evoluated all along the war towards the infantry mortars, and the frontier with the grenade-launcher devices became often unclear. The fuse detonates the bursting charge which shatters the case and scatters hot, sharp case pieces (fragments, splinters) at high velocity. Wartime scheme of the French 75mm tracer shell. Hollow projectiles, named 'shells', still spherical and filled with inflammable material or gunpowder, appeared in the 17th century. Welcome Guest. for years.

The shock of discharge fragmented the cast iron waffles, and the shell burst during the flight dislocated the thin steel enveloppe, spreading the thin cast iron fragments and the lead bullets in all directions but in relatively small numbers, with a moderate speed, and producing a hardly visible burst cloud. Moreover, it needed a very sophisticated time and percussion fuze ('KZ11' ou 'HZ05') able to order the multiple functions of the ammunition. In some cases, for instance most of the German heavy caliber shells, the high explosive shells were an assembly of several seperate parts, the base being threaded on the cylindric / ogival part and bearing a base fuze. Specific use in antipersonnel or barbwire destruction missions. Two additional types of chemical shells were developed during the war, smoke and star shells. - Vintage antique? Despite having sent observers to the Russo-Japanese War, the European armies were surprised to find their prewar shells, particularly shrapnel, were insufficient to destroy earthworks and cut wire obstacles. Designed to burst right over the ennemy troops by the means of a specific time setting device (time fuze), they were spreading an deadly lead bullets and steel fragments rain while producing a smoke cloud that allowed the gunners to tune their aiming.
Smoke shells carried a chemical payload that would emit smoke after detonation, and were often employed with gas and HE shells to amplify suppressive effects on … The area is restored using the original artefacts found in the ground by the Main de Massiges Association since 2009. https://www.alamy.com/shell-fragment-exploded-during-the-first-world-war-on-display-in-the-main-de-massiges-in-marne-region-in-north-eastern-france-the-main-de-massiges-was-one-of-the-major-sites-of-the-first-world-war-from-1914-to-1918-the-area-is-restored-using-the-original-artefacts-found-in-the-ground-by-the-main-de-massiges-association-since-2009-image220174359.html, German WW1 bunker at Martinpuich on the Somme Battlefield of 1916, https://www.alamy.com/german-ww1-bunker-at-martinpuich-on-the-somme-battlefield-of-1916-image220582242.html.
The tracer shells (in German 'Lichtspurgranate') were filled with a slow-burning composition (for instance a mixture of baryum nitrate and magnesium) or phosphorous and their head was pierced by holes letting the flames escape during the flight.
