It's a somewhat steep hike down a paved path and then a pretty hike along a nice stream. Nice Trail but it is closed today .

Gold discovered in 1850 created a small flurry of interest around the canyon, but no ore of any consequence was removed from the area. The falls themselves are spectacular, of course. This was a pretty cool waterfall. Sturtevant Falls is one of the Los Angeles waterfall hikes. A very steep downhill going in, then nice typical trail mostly shaded all the way to a water fall which you can get under if you’d like, I did the water feels great after the long hike, then you turn around and Hike back. The trail takes you past lush foliage and travels along a stream that's interrupted by the occasional flood control dam. This is among the most popular hikes in the San Gabriel Mountains, and with good reason. In my personal opinion not family friendly just cause of the uphill climb back, more often than not you see groups of families just WINDED and they can barely finish it. The rest of the year isn’t too busy. The police or ranger said to go on a weekday. Like most waterfalls in the Southern California area, the popularity and splendor of the falls make them an experience to remember. The last stretch walking back is the most difficult because it is the most uphill and that's when you're the most tired. A leisurely hike through an enchanted portion of the San Gabriel Mountains leading to a fifty foot waterfall.

Highly recommend starting before 8:30 am during the summer.

The 3.3-mile hike from Chantry Flats to Sturtevant Falls follows a pristine creek past resort era cabins. Overflow parking is wherever you can find a spot on the side of the road before reaching the parking lot. Some choose to spend $5.00 Mon - Thurs, $10.00 Fri - Sun and holidays to park in the Adams' Pack Station lot. Here you pass by a sign reminding you to "Take care of the land. Only hard part is coming back with the steep hill. Also, the falls at the end is always a nice treat (even though it's not as glorious in the summer). it's mesquito galore....turn around after 1 hour...just unbearable.

The falls itself has a weak stream on account of it being summer with no rain. Lots of trash, huge family groups, noisy, dirty stream, too many people at the waterfall. The rest is super easy for a hiker in shape. Been on this trail before and it’s good. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.

Then there is plenty of shade along the way.

We went in early March and there was plenty of water. The first half mile is downhill with no shade.

Went early this morning . There are several stream crossings before arriving at the Falls, so trekking poles or an extra pair of socks are recommended.

Southern California Waterfalls: When Is The Best Time To See Them?

Closed due to wild fire warnings in the area. I lived by Fletcher park....we called ourselves the…, Just went today with my husband and friend. Someday you'll be part of it". If you have a furry friend with you, I'd definitely recommend bringing paw wax to provide a barrier between sensitive paw pads and the hot pavement.

This past Sunday, 7 of us went on the hike hoping to have a great time, but there was no water... Water was still and dirty for not moving much. The trail is primarily used for hiking and walking and is best used from October until May. Sturtevant Falls is one of the finest waterfalls in Angeles National Forest. Great trail! Take time to relax and enjoy the falls before turning around and returning the way you came. But nonetheless still beautiful. Hope to visit soon. It was nice and cool on our way in. Here the pavement ends as you veer right and cross the Winter Creek bridge to the old site of Robert's Camp where Big Santa Anita Canyon and Winter Creek converge.

Continue on and veer to the left passing #67 Castle on the Creek. Sturtevant Falls was one of the more attractive waterfalls in the Southern California area. This is an easy hike and perfect for anyone new to hiking but be aware that the last 0.6 mile return to the parking lot is all uphill. The trail begins to narrow as you walk alongside the stream under a canopy of Live Oak and Alder. See park page for more information. Along the way you'll see a number of privately owned cabins built between 1906 and 1937.

I would rate an easy to moderate hike only because of the incline you have to go up to get to the parking lot coming out of the canyon. Sturtevant Falls is an excellent choice for a city getaway. It starts off very hilly and then becomes mildly hilly. I'd rate this hike a solid moderate level trek, mostly because of the steep grade on the way out. Angeles National Forest; Santa Anita Race Park; Los Angeles County Arboretum & Botanic Garden; Le Spa by Sophie; Mt. Pretty hot on the way out (there's minimal coverage when you're heading back to the trailhead). Unfortunately it is definitely closed.

Seen dogs and families with kids but the hike back up is steep so take that into consideration. It’s hot but there was good amount of shade. As of September 2020, trails in this area are closed due to wildfire. Up past the falls into Winter…, I grew up in El Monte Ca during a time when the city was spending a goodly amount of money on the parks service basically having all the parks staffed daily during the summer by college student whose main job was to organize activities for us kids. Looks like a couple of parking lots available to park in and they were almost full on a weekday early morning(8am).
