I wouldn't compare one author to another except that The Forsyte Saga is a great story......I would try Kate Morton perhaps? Every character is finely and individually drawn like a character in a Velasquez portrait of a large family. He goes in search for Irene for a divorce but has no current evidence for the divorce.
For the first one-hundred pages or so, I found myself having to frequently refer to the Forsyte family genealogical chart; however, by the end of the book I knew all of the characters and their place in the family intimately. The title derives from Soames' reflections as he breaks up the house in which his Uncle Timothy, recently deceased at age 100 and the last of the older generation of Forsytes, had lived as a recluse, hoarding his life like property. The story is deeply moving, funny, infuriating and completely compelling. Took a year of picking it up, putting it down, etc. An epic saga of a single extended family which spans several generations, Galsworthy creates characters that are human and fallible, noble, kind and cruel. I am so blown away by this book that I am almost speechless. I love Rosamunde Pilcher's books and thought I might give the Forsyte Saga a try...any other recommendations?
