The Northern Renaissance is currently eclipsed by that of the South (centred on Italy), but in many ways at the time it was the more innovative and ultimately more influential. It was intended to serve as an epitaph for Canon Joris van der Paele, who would, in fact, die in 1443 – two years after van Eyck. There has been speculation that they may represent van Eyck and an assistant, after the pattern of his Arnolfini Portrait.
