Going back for 2 weeks this year. Beyond the enclosed garden, the Rona red deer come to graze on the grassy slope to the shore in the early morning and late evening. The modern world recedes further as you settle in to Escape, a late Victorian stone cottage with fenced garden nestled into the curve of the bay. Dolphin, Minke whales and basking sharks can all be seen in the waters around Rona. A one week stay is necessary in this heavenly place that is run by humorous and gentle folk, Bill and Lorraine. Rona is home to a host of wildlife; otters & sea eagles, dolphins, porpoises, minke whales and basking sharks are all frequent visitors. Rona, sometimes called South Rona to distinguish it from North Rona, is a small inhabited island in the Scottish Inner Hebrides. For a true escapist holiday, book in low season and the chances are you’ll have Dry Harbour to yourself. There seems to be a kind of "natural selection" in place for visitors to the island.

The varied terrain of this wee isle, situated between Skye and the west coast of Scotland, belies its modest size of just 5 miles long.

Fishing or foraging for seafood in the rockpools at low tide are favourite pastimes and any catches can be brought from shore to saucepan in minutes…whilst the woodburning stoves and central heating ensure cosy evenings out of season – relax in front of the fire with a complimentary dram of our Rona whisky after a day exploring the island.

There’s games and books aplenty and sea views all around – a shame not to enjoy it with some Isle of Rona whisky…Two other, smaller, cottages, Skyescape and Seascape, are set some way apart; larger families and groups can rent all three together.

If you’ve never experienced night skies away from street lights, then Rona will enchant you – especially if you are lucky enough to witness the rare northern lights or the frequent spectacular sunsets. A gang of seals greets you as you draw into Big Harbour – as, less raucously, does friendly and knowledgeable Bill, one half of Rona’s permanent population. Swim in the bay, trawl rock pools for your supper, stalk red deer with Bill (the venison is delicious)… or just sit on the deck and savour the briny air. right at the end of the track, in a secluded location – and hence very popular with honeymoon couples, ‘Escape’ – the former Rona Manse – overlooks the tidal bay of Dry Harbour (Acarseid Thioram) from an elevated site with fantastic west facing views across the Sound of Raasay towards Skye and the pinnacle, ‘The Old Man of Storr’. It lies between the Sound of Raasay and the Inner Sound just north of the neighbouring island of Raasay and east of the Trotternish peninsula of Skye. Walkers can follow trails that traverse the island or wander off track through mossy woodland or clamber over the summits of hard Lewisian gneiss. We relaxed, read, walked, visited the beach, spoke to each other, feasted.

It has a total area of 930 hectares and a population of 3. There’s so much to explore & discover, you’ll find a week too short which is why most of our guests return time & time again. We highly recommend this unique and gorgeous place. Looking out over the sea waters of the Inner Sound, the cave still has rows of boulder 'pews' that served past populations.
